Foster (Harvard A.B. 1926; A.M. 1927) taugh history at Connecticut College from 1927-1932 and then returned to Harvard to study for a Ph. D. in botany. After completing his Ph. D. in 1936 he was appointed a Parker Traveling Fellow by Harvard, 1936-1937. From 1937-1938 Foster was an instructor of botany at the University of Arizona. He returned to Harvard in 1940 and made the rest of his career there, serving as assistant in the Gray Herbarium from 1940-1947, as acting curator from 1947 to 1954, ...
