Foster (Harvard A.B. 1926; A.M. 1927) taugh history at Connecticut College from 1927-1932 and then returned to Harvard to study for a Ph. D. in botany. After completing his Ph. D. in 1936 he was appointed a Parker Traveling Fellow by Harvard, 1936-1937. From 1937-1938 Foster was an instructor of botany at the University of Arizona.
